LVB-IWRM Programme visits local water and government authorities in Migori Town, Kenya

A LVB IWRM Programme Consultant, involved in the projects’ pipeline development, paid a visit to Migori County Water and Sanitation Co. Ltd (MIWASCO), the Water Service Provider of Migori town in Kenya, to examine their Water Treatment Plant. Due to a lack of revenue and subsidies to pay electricity bills the Plant was found inoperable and in need of rehabilitation. During the visit, the Programme Consultant advised the Utility to supplement the electric power supply with a solar system.

Currently there are no wastewater collection and treatment facilities in Migori town, and consequently the sewage is released into the Migori River or disposed of in dumping sites (a case being made for ablution blocks). Nevertheless, there are up to 30 ablution blocks in operation.

At the end of the visit, the Programme Consultant proposed projects which aim to rehabilitate the water treatment works plus a water supply extension throughout the town.  A sewerage site is also under discussion.

Proposals will be finalised and submitted through the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency (LVWWDA) on behalf of the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation.
