Exploring the potential for community monitoring of water quality in the Lake Victoria Basin

On Wednesday 26 May a meeting took place between the Lake Victoria Basin IWRM Programme (LVB IWRMP) team and the Water Resources Authority - Lake Victoria South Basin Area (WRA-LVS), at their office in Kisumu, Kenya. The LVBC PCU Programme Coordinator introduced the Programme to the Regional Manager, Dr. Rose Ogara, and the team briefly introduced a possible pilot on community monitoring for water quality parameters. Dr. Ogara welcomed cooperation with the Programme and agreed to a follow-up technical workshop on the next day, Thursday 27 May.

In this workshop the teams of LVB IWRMP and the WRA-LVS worked together to define a possible approach for the pilot. This was done in a lively and interactive manner where all participants contributed freely. The notes of the workshop and a draft framework of the pilot based on the discussions will be prepared by LVB IWRMP and will form the basis for a follow-up meeting, in which sustainability and viability of the pilot will be determined.
